This far, the only regular communication channel for Anelok has been
this mailing list. Unfortunately, the list has become not only a rather
exclusive (only about 150 subscriptions), but also a rather quiet place.
Also, mailing lists are nowadays often perceived a old-fashioned.
I'm thinking that Anelok might get a bit more attention if we expand to
other, hipper, locations.
Now, creating "Anelok" places all over the social networks would lead
to a disconnected community and a lot of work just to keep the channels
active, so I want to be selective.
One thing that shouldn't take a lot of time would be a sub-reddit about
Anelok: I follow password-related news anyway, so there'd be new
material almost every day (*), and reddit has a format that's not too
horrible for discussion either.
(*) I wouldn't want to post to the list for all the small things I
run into, so I just collect links for possible future use in a
local file, from which they of course rarely re-emerge.
Examples of such news snippets:
- Interesting reflection on the danger of using a social network as
single sign-on provider, when border controls now involve being asked
to reveal social media accounts, and possible give access to them:
https://www.heise.de/forum/heise-online/News-Kommentare/Einreise-in-die-USA-Kontrolle-der-Social-Media-Accounts-wird-getestet/Re-Google-Plus-Sind-da-dann-nicht-auch-Youtube-und-evtl-Mails-und-Cloud-dabei/posting-30085325/show/
- Forgetting your password can be treated as contempt of court:
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/03/20/appeals_court_contempt_passwords/
- SMBC makes fun of weak passwords:
http://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/password
I could also post news there, or link to posts on the Qi-Hw list.
Does this sound good so far ?
Now, I just registered with reddit, and found that they don't allow new
accounts to create sub-reddits:
https://www.reddit.com/r/help/comments/2yob6r/creating_a_subreddit/
It seems that sub-reddit ownership can later be changed, so it doesn't
have to be me who creates the sub-reddit.
Would anyone here happen to be a senior enough reddit user, with
sufficient "positive karma", and could lend a helping hand ?
Thanks,
- Werner
